Reflections on a Hawaiian Heritage

Hookuakino

Hookuakino 1997
Paint on wood*
19  x 12
$9,000

Hookuakino means “to change form.” This work combines the traditional ancient royal Hawaiian ahuula (feather cape or cloak) and abbreviated Western cross, bound together in a rectangular format forming a heraldic shield-like motif. The stylized Hawaiian royal palaoa (whale-ivory ornament) surmounting this further represents ancient Hawaiian culture with circular stylizations symbolizing overlaid Oriental cultural influences. The combination of Hawaiian, Western and Oriental design elements intertwines to form a contemporary image unique to Hawaii.
