Hoopaa Moolelo means “to record a story.” In this series the artist uses three elements, the royal palaoa (whale-ivory ornament), the royal ahuula (royal feather cape or cloak), and traditional Hawaiian kepakepa (zigzag) and poho (peg) repairs. This illustrates a particular mythological tale or historical event that, while specific to the artist when creating it, is not made clear to the viewer. Every piece in the series remains enigmatic and mysterious, relying on the viewer’s imagination.
