This series refers to Keanakakoi (Cave of the adze-maker), the ancient stone-quarry near the summit of 13,000 foot Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii. The large size of this piece reflects the size of the quarry itself, which covered one and a half square miles and was the largest in the entire Pacific. The rough stone texture fades to sharp edges, suggesting the process of creating a Hawaiian stone implement. The ahuula (royal feather cape or cloak) motif was designed to also symbolize the volcanic mountain Mauna Kea.
