Reflections on a Hawaiian Heritage

Hoopahono

Paint on wood*
22 x 11
$8,000

Hoopahono means “to mend.” Lines formed by two different traditional Hawaiian repairs cross in high relief against a stylized royal ahuula (feather cloak or cape) and symbolize kapu (forbidden).  Kepakepa (zigzag) were fiber-sewing repairs for broken or cracked gourd objects. Pewa (fishtail) repairs were wood insets for damaged wood bowls.

*Temporary plastic case is for protection until framed.
